During my weekly Zoom meetings for my ENG 250 class, I always have to go into breakout groups. Essentially, I go into a smaller call in a group with my classmates, picked at random. We are given a shared document, on which there are questions, relevant to some of the reading of the week. We spend the time in the breakout group trying to answer the questions, building off of each other's ideas. Some of us are also given one of two special roles, scribe or spokesman. The scribe is to write down the group's answers to the questions in the document, whereas the spokesman is to share the group's answers with everyone, after returning to the primary Zoom call. While this assignment certainly helps me flex my communicative abilities, I have found it more helpful in developing my Interpersonal Skills. In the breakout groups, it's very hard to work together, unless you can all get along. I've had some great conversations with my classmates, during our remaining time in the breakout groups. It's helped me get to know some people I would have never known, especially since, as it's a college class, I have a very diverse set of classmates, with different age groups and backgrounds. I think that if I can sufficiently communicate and learn with people much older than me, I can do the same in other scenarios, which will be invaluable, not just in my education, but in life.
